At a stage, your computer will feel very slow and crappy. Wait, what do you mean by slow and crappy? Well, your startup takes forever. If you're like me and you have more than user(more on that on the next post) on your computer, it will take even longer. The users' page is like a two step thing, once you've loaded the users' page, you'll then have to choose your respective user and then it starts loading your desktop, icons, etc. Now, usually computers that are around a few months old(depending on how frequent you use your computer) will get this slow-down. Even though Microsoft changed the BIOS for Windows 7(boosts up your startup), the problem will still occur. Even Steve Job's genius machines(Mac) had the same problem, eventually. There are a few ways to overcome it.
1. Use a registry cleaner.
This is the most effective way to speed up your computer. I've tried it and it works. However, it mainly depends on which registry cleaning software you choose. I've tried Iobit Advanced SystemCare Free and it works like a charm. I've tried others, but they weren't too impressive so I won't name them. Another good free software is CCleaner. Rumour says it stands for CrapCleaner but I don't know how far that's true. But yes, it does make sense *lame joke* Don't expect instant results, it usually takes around 3-5 times of scanning and cleaning depending how 'filled' your computer is.
2. Defragment your hard drive
Cleaning your registry isn't enough, as it only solves half the problem if you have a lot of programs. One way that's effective and worth doing is to defragment your hard drive(defrag for short). What it basically does is it saves your hard drive space and speeds up your computer's startup. Iobit Advanced SystemCare Free and CCleaner both have this feature, so you don't need to download anything else.
3. Choose necessary programs to startup
A lot of users(including myself when I wasn't into computers) tend to let everything startup with the Operating System. This seriously will slow down your computer's startup. Here's how:
Windows XP users
1. Click the Start button.
2. Click Run.
3. Type in msconfig.
4. Go to the Startup tab, and you can now select which programs you want to startup(only choose the necessary ones).
Windows Vista & 7 users
1. Click the Start button(Orb at the bottom-left hand corner).
2. Type in msconfig at the search bar.
3. Go to the Startup tab, and you can now select which programs you want to startup(only choose the necessary ones).
This is a very useful tool Microsoft added for Windows. It gradually speeds up your computer's startup if you have lots of programs.
4. Uninstall unwanted programs
Another problem a lot of users face - they don't uninstall unwanted programs. Eventually, it piles up and it takes up space unnecessarily and slows down your computer. If you're a computer geek, you'd probably know this so just skip it. For those who don't, it's under Control Panel.
Windows XP users
1. Click the Start button.
2. Go to Control Panel.
3. Double click on Add or Remove Programs.
4. Browse through and search for any unwanted softwares and uninstall them.
Windows Vista & 7 users
1. Click the Start button(Orb at the bottom-left hand corner)
2. Go to Control Panel.
3. Double click on Programs and Features.
4. Browse through and search for any unwanted softwares and uninstall them.
I tried doing this, and I freed up 10GB of stuff from my hard drive(mainly games).
5. Clean up the cookies and the saved data
If you view a lot of videos from the internet, or visit flash-content websites, your computer will most likely get slower startup faster. Experience just tells this, because my dad's desktop was extremely slow, and even the startup took forever. Its all because my brother's obsession with YouTube videos and flash games, the temp folder was filled with junk. There are a few ways of cleaning this, one being cleaning your registry. The other way is to clear it via your internet browser.
Google Chrome users
1. Open up Google Chrome.
2. Click the Settings(wrench at the top-right hand corner)
3. Click Options and then go to Under the Hood tab.
4. Click Clear browser data and check every box and make sure the Clear data from this period is set to Everything.
5. Click Clear browsing data and you're done.
Sorry guys, but I don't use Firefox or Safari. If you want to do the same, its under Settings.
6. Buy a better computer with better hardware
Usually, people who tell me that their computer is still slow even though they did what I said(above), and they ask me Why is my computer so slow? The only answer I can give them is Your computer's hardware ain't good enough, bro. Yeah, we're in the year Core i5 is in every computer. But hey, some people still have computers with Intel Pentium 4 chips inside. For those non-geeky people, it means a very slow chip compared to what we have as default chips. I won't burn holes in your wallet, so relax. The not-so-old chip - Core 2 Duo still performs well. My laptop uses a Core 2 Duo chip and boy, oh boy, its speedy and its really worth the money. I only feel the lag when I do hardcore photo editing or opening lots of different applications at once. However, Intel's chips for laptops aren't as 'powerful' as the desktop versions. So if you're getting a desktop you shouldn't be facing problems. Intel's latest line of chips, the i-series is even more powerful and much more energy efficient. Check those out too.
